Self-education is the best!
I’ve learnt that life can throw all sorts of stuff at you at the most unexpected times and in the most unexpected ways. In the past few months I’ve experienced adventure, spiritual connections, death, once-in-a-lifetime opportunities, new cultures and a new way of living.
During this time I had committed to educating myself on all new experiences. Whenever I had a conversation with someone about an unfamiliar topic, I made a point to then go home and read about it so I could understand. If I wanted to experience a new adventure, I would research and learn before embarking on that adventure. And when I lost a loved one, I educated myself about realising that it’s OK to not be OK. And that it’s important to not let the sadness rule your life, to live life with purpose.
I believe that we need to keep working towards finding our purpose. Because whatever drives us, we all derive happiness from finding purpose.
Here’s a select list of some of the things I’ve taught myself over the past few months…from sheer intrigue, new experiences and just wanting to learn:
- SEO – still working on this, it gives me a headache
- Set up my location free business as a virtual assistant so I can work from anywhere in the world and continue to do all the things I love at the same time. This included writing my own legal contracts, setting up the correct software platforms, social media, marketing and the good old general business 101 stuff.
- I designed and developed my own website from scratch using wordpress
- Joined a location free community so I can keep networking while I travel. Being part of this group has been invaluable with access to resources and friendly people.
- I learnt about Aircraft – in particular war-birds and the USA military fleet. So random, I know, but after attending the Oshkosh Air Show earlier this year, I was really intrigued with the aircraft that I saw and got to fly in, so I needed to know more.
- American politics, the Trilateral Commission and Secret societies in the USA…because when in the USA it makes sense to know.
I’ve also read several books over the past few months as well. Here is a selection of some of them below:
- A brief guide to world domination by Chris Guillebeau
- Sweet Ass Journal to Develop Your Happiness Muscle in 100 Days – by Heath Armstrong
- The Zen Habits Guide to Traveling Light & Living Light – by Leo Babauta
- The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck: A Counter-intuitive Approach to Living a Good Life – by Mark Manson
- The Introvert Entrepreneur – by Beth Buelow
- The Bootstrap VA: The Go-Getter’s Guide to Becoming a Virtual Assistant – by Lisa Morosky
- You are a Badass – by Jen Sincero
I’m looking forward to the next few months of self-education. I’m back in the USA until late December, then heading to Mexico and Cuba. Between now and then I’ll be learning how to speak Spanish, educating myself about Mexico and Cuba, reading some more books, travelling around the USA and landing some new clients.
Feel free to comment with what you are doing for self-education. I would love to hear your stories.
